A challenging Formula One Race track.
Only a few years ago the location of the Chinese Grand Prix was a paddy field! This circuit is futuristic like Shanghai itself, with sweeping curves and long straights. This is an excellent opportunity to see how much China has changed over recent years with the exception of its vibrant and strong culture.
The Shanghai International Circuit debuted in late 2004 and was designed to maximise spectator viewing and racing excitement. The track itself is tight and technical with fast speeds and it is one of the few tracks with overtaking opportunities. It has an equal number of right and left-handers, a good mix of corner types, from long sweeps to tight hairpins and a number of straights where the drivers can stretch the legs of their 900 plus horsepower cars. The longest straight is over 1km and provides the most obvious overtaking opportunity, driving behind a competitor, it is possible to slipstream along the 1km stretch and get alongside before making a move.
Due to the mixed characteristics, the teams look for downforce and mechanical grip for the slower bends, whilst ensuring maximum speed on the long straights. The general consensus after the debut race was that the Shanghai International Circuit is technically demanding from a set-up perspective and also quite tough physically.
There are many highways around Shanghai International Circuit, such as A12 (Shanghai-Jiading-Liuhe) and A11 (Shanghai-Nanjing) highways; 204 and 312 National Highways; Baoshan-Anting and Jiading-Songjiang Highways; constituting a fast and convenient road traffic system. Traveling time from Shanghai F1 city hotels to the circuit is approximately 45mins.
