This year Hockenheim will host the German Grand Prix. A race track well-loved by spectators with an excellent stadium complex with large grandstands high over the track for superb views. It is fast and unique in its layout - similar to Monza, Italy, a historic circuit and very demanding on the drivers.
towns is filled with tree-lined avenues, fountains and squares busy with pavement restaurants serving hearty German fare and fruity local wines. It is an ideal spot for a race weekend in this picturesque area of northern Germany.
Located some fifty miles south of Frankfurt and fifteen miles west of Heidelberg, the circuit was originally built as a test circuit for Mercedes cars. The German Grand Prix has been staged here since 1986.
The Hockenheimring is in the state of Baden - Württemberg. An automobile institution and now the home of the German Formula One Grand Prix every second year. The track is a landmark on the Formula One GP schedule.
In 1968 Hockenheim hit the headlines when Jim Clark was killed there in an F2 race. Nevertheless, Formula One came to the track in 1970 as the Nurburgring was quickly becoming outdated. Once the Nurburgring had been updated however the sport returned there, leaving Hockenheim with national and F2 events.
Since the debut of Michael Schumacher, the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim has become one of the most atmospheric races of the season, the noise in the stadium section being almost deafening at times. In 2002 the long runs through the forest were amended and the layout of the track was significantly modified. Despite arguments that it had lost some of its character, the first race at the new track, in 2002, was deemed a great success and has remained a regular feature on the Formula One calendar ever since.
